MAKERS

The Inspiration for We Are Makers

How it all began

We Are Makers was inspired by the women of the MAKERS series, which originated from filmmaker Dyllan McGee's experience of seeing no women in film. While Dyllan saw documentaries about major world events and important subjects, she saw no films covering the women's rights movement or any of the phenomenal stories of impactful women. So she got to work.

What came out of Dyllan's idea was MAKERS - a project about the women who changed the world, but have often been left out of history books. Makers tells the unknown stories of women in all fields breaking barriers and paving the way for young girls, making it possible for them to be professional athletes, astronauts, and more.

Dyllan partnered with PBS, which broadcast the first MAKERS film in 2013, and then six others after that. AOL supported building an online platform for women's stories, and of course, the women who are featured enlisted to tell their stories.

Now, MAKERS is a feminist media brand for newsMAKERS, historyMAKERS, and troubleMAKERS, telling the stories of today's trailblazing women to inspire the changeMAKERS of tomorrow. The platform features thousands of original videos and hundreds of interviews with everyone from Oprah Winfrey to Shonda Rhimes to Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

This is just the beginning for these women’s stories. Makers continues to grow—more films, more women, and more inspiring stories. MAKERS and We Are Makers are meant to inspire and motivate you to be a maker in your own life!
